The Latest Oxymoron: "Honor Killings"

(Photo of Talyor Siluwe courtesy of Taylor Siluwe)

My new homeboy, Taylor Siluwe, has a tragic story posted over at his blog about some oppressive phemonema called an "honor killing" which is used against women (and now homosexuals) by their very own families.

I wish someone in my family would.

Read the article here.

[Review] THOR #10

Whenever I read an issue of THOR, I can't help but think about what could have been with the WONDER WOMAN relaunch over at DC Comics. When DC Comics decided that the WONDER WOMAN comic needed a reboot, they decided to basically jettison all of the things that made Wonder Woman a unique comic creation.

They rid the book of much of its mythological backstory and eliminated Wonder Woman's role as a political emissary. Those elements were replaced by what I believe were superficial, innocuous and dumbed-down attempts to garner WONDER WOMAN a larger audience: a doubting Wonder Woman who wants to experience humanity decides to disguise herself as a secret-spy agent for the Department of Metahuman Affairs. Yeah. That's human, all right.

DC hired Allan Heinberg to write the series--and because writing WONDER WOMAN was so low on his list of priorities (he was, after all, writing the ABC hit series, Grey's Anatomy) the book was continually and drastically late, killing whatever momentum and excitement might have been drummed up by the relaunch.

Then, to add insult to injury, DC released AMAZONS ATTACK, a series which turned Wonder Woman's peace-loving, warrior-sister Amazons into murderous terrorists--and then mind-wiped them out of existence.

Worst of all was the fact that WONDER WOMAN was never in need of a relaunch to begin with as she was, prior to the disastrous reboot, already in the capable hands of Greg Rucka, who celebrated the character's herstory and mythology with a smart, fresh and edgy take on our favorite Amazon (though, they never gave him a consistently stellar artist to match his wit and verve).

At least DC realized their tomfoolery and listened to readers by bringing the amazing Gail Simone aboard some shotty fourteen issues and one horrible mini-series later. Simone, however, has her work cut out for her; there's a ton of damage to be undone and much confidence to be regained.

I guess the WONDER WOMAN fiasco served as a lesson to the people over at MARVEL, for what did the brilliant J. Michael Straczynski and the insanely talented Olivier Coipel do with the creature of myth in their charge? Why, the complete opposite of what DC did with Wonder Woman, of course!

Where Wonder Woman's relaunch seemed to have nothing but contempt for her and her mythos, THOR is a complete celebration of the character's mythology. Issue #10 is no exception.

It's an intelligent collaboration from the very first page as we follow a bird flying from road sign to road sign until the reader is gently placed at the destination: Asgard. Meanwhile, Loki is still up to her/his (yes, her/his!) Machiavellian schemes and power plays as he/she reveals a secret that threatens to eventually ignite a civil war on Asgard.

Straczynski works with duality quite well on this series, exploring not simply the differences between gods and demons disguised as gods, but also the differences between gods and human beings. There is an incredibly powerful scene in which Bill, a resident of the town over which Asgard now hovers, recalls his visit to Asgard and his date with a sky goddess named Kelda. It's clear that the nature of the relationship is sexual attraction, but the degree to which that is true for one (to, possibly, the exclusion of anything else) is where the conflict festers. Again, Straczynski gives us two possible consequences of this pairing.

A.

Kyle: First time I went to Vegas, I thought it was the most beautiful place in all the world. All the lights and neon and the women--wll, the women. Anyway, it didn't take me long to figure out the whole place was on the hustle, that none of it was what it looked like, and if your not real careful, a place like that can kill you.

Bill: Asgard ain't Vegas, Kyle.

Kyle: No, sir. You're absolutely right. It isn't Vegas. 'Cause in Vegas, even guys like you and me can win once in a while.

B.

Resident: Pay no attention to him, Bill. A man loses two hundred-fifty on the slots, and he thinks it gives him wisdom. Biggest mistake I ever made were in listening to guys like that instead of listening to my own heart--what my granddad used to call "the Tyranny of Reasonable Voices. Mistakes you make can always be worked out. The mistakes you don't make because you do nothing, because you don't try, you don't risk, those are the ones that haunt you when you get old. Regret, that's the real killer. Go where your heart leads you, Bill. Life'll take care of the rest. It always does.

A bit of pessimism, a bit of optimism, and I suspect the truth lies somewhere in-between.

If I had to pick a star on this book, however, I'd have to point all ten of my fingers at Olivier Copiel. His art is a feast to behold in both subtlety and majesty, in both light and dark. His gods and demons are immaculately desgined; his regular folk wonderfully flawed and humble. But best of all, his storytelling ability makes it so that you'd still know what this story was about even if the dialogue were removed. That is most evident in Loki's actions on the last page. Coipel makes every issue a living, breathing masterpiece.

The general complaint is that THOR's pacing is maddeningly slow, but I think that's a misreading. I'd say rather that THOR is written with incredible patience and each panel and piece of dialogue is deliberate. It is, by far, my favorite monthly comic currently being published.

Thinking about attending a non-Ivy League school, working hard, earning honors and a high GPA, and then enjoying post-graduation top financial success? Think again. According to this article at the Wall Street Journal, Ivy League graduates, regardless of their area of study or grades, earn, on average, 32-34% more than non-Ivy League graduates.

This should come as no suprise to Americans. After all, George W. Bush attended Yale University and "graduated" with a C-minus average. He subsequently went on to ruin business after business before finally becoming president of the United States of America and ruining the law, the economy, and the government.

So the choice is yours: bust your ass at a non-Ivy League institution, achieve academic success and get paid less than you deserve, or lamp in mediocirty at an Ivy League institution and get paid more than you deserve.

The catch? You'll have to sell your first-born child to be able to afford an Ivy League tuition.

Oh yeah; they've designed it so as to make it as difficult for you as possible.

And before you bug me about it: There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. Some people at Ivy League universities actually work hard, and some hard-working graduates from non-Ivy League universities find top financial success.

And Yet You Poor Motherfuckers Keep Voting Republican

(Photo courtesy of the Huffington Post)

Dear Poor White People,

When will you motherfuckers learn? The Republican party promises you five things:

1. That your "Whiteness" makes you better than "The Niggers."

2. That fetuses will get better protection than children who've made it outside the womb.

3. That there's no way in tarnation faggots will have the right to marry.

4. That Jehovah is an American.

And the one that doesn't get advertised as much:

5. That corporations will be made wealthy beyond measure at the expense of you and your family.

Numbers 1 through 4 are divisive illusions that you really need to wake from, but even if they weren't, are you really willing to endure Number 5 just to have Numbers 1-4? If your voting record is any indication, I suppose the answer is yes. But what you've failed to discover (even though it stares you directly in the face on a daily basis) is that the price of your stupidity is your imminent demise.

Oil Profits Shatter Records
by John Porretto

HOUSTON — Exxon Mobil reported second-quarter earnings of $11.68 billion Thursday, the biggest quarterly profit ever by any U.S. corporation, but the results fell well short of Wall Street expectations and shares fell in premarket trading.
The world's largest publicly traded oil company said net income for the April-June period came to $2.22 a share, up from $10.26 billion, or $1.83 a share, a year ago.
Revenue rose 40 percent to $138.1 billion from $98.4 billion in the year-earlier quarter.

Excluding an after-tax charge of $290 million related to an Exxon Valdez court settlement, earnings amounted to $11.97 billion, or $2.27 per share.
Analysts on average expected Exxon Mobil to earn $2.52 a share on revenue of $144 billion, according to a survey by Thomson Financial. The estimates typically exclude one-time items.

The record-setting results were largely expected, given that crude prices in the second quarter were nearly double what they were a year ago. Natural gas prices were significantly higher too.

But investors expected even bigger profits Thursday, especially after Europe's Royal Dutch Shell reported a 33 percent jump in second-quarter earnings of $11.6 billion, which fell just shy of Exxon's own record earnings from 2007.
Shares fell 2 percent, or $1.68, to $82.70 in premarket trading.

Setting U.S. profit records has become commonplace for Irving-based Exxon Mobil. The $11.68 billion topped its own U.S. record of $11.66 billion, posted in the fourth quarter of last year. Right behind that was the $10.9 billion it reported to start 2008.

Exxon Mobil owns the record for at least the top six most-profitable quarters for a U.S. company, as well as the largest annual profit.

HIV Remains an Enormous Epidemic in Black America

What I'm hearing from my young friends and co-workers is that it isn't that they don't know the risks regarding HIV infection, it's that they're CHOOSING to have unprotected sex for a myriad of reasons:

A. They're embarassed or afraid to bring up the subject of protection because they fear rejection or violence from their partner.

B. They're monogamous and assume their partner is monogamous, too (this is a tricky one and very difficult to address).

C. They prefer the feeling of "raw sex" to sex with a condom.

D. HIV is "no longer a death sentence," so they don't believe having unprotected sex is that big of a deal (they aren't aware of the negative side-effects associated with HIV treatment because the media and other outlets have focused primarily on the longevity of lives of individuals infected with HIV rather than quality of their lives once they began treatment).

E. Despite their knowledge of HIV and the statistics, they still don't think they're going to be infected (and refuse to be tested to determine if they've already been infected).

F. They simply "don't care" because having sex with someone shouldn't be "this complicated."

Meanwhile, the epidemic continues and we're blaming everyone but ourselves:

U.S. AIDS policies neglect blacks: report
By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor Tue Jul 29, 1:29 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. policies and cash may be leading the fight against AIDS globally, but they have neglected the epidemic among black Americans, the Black AIDS Institute said in a report released on Tuesday.

While blacks account for one in eight people in the United States, half of all Americans infected with HIV are black, the report found.

"We are 30 percent of the new cases among gay men, 40 percent of the new cases among men in general, 60 percent of the cases among women and 70 percent of the new cases among youth," Black AIDS Institute CEO Phill Wilson told reporters in a telephone briefing.

"Yet ... the U.S. response to AIDS in black America stands in sharp contrast to the international response to the epidemic overseas," he added.

Al Sharpton, a prominent activist and founder of the National Action Network, agreed.
"U.S. policy makers seem to be much more interested in the epidemic in Botswana than the epidemic in Louisiana. This is an unnecessary and deadly choice. Both need urgent attention," Sharpton said.

Dr. Helene Gayle, former head of AIDS for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and now president of the poverty-fighting charity CARE, said many HIV infected blacks are not in traditional high-risk groups such as men who have sex with men, injecting drug users and sex workers.

"The federal government's approach to the epidemic in black America is fundamentally flawed," Gayle said. This includes both a lack of funding and poor targeting of the money, she said.

EMPOWERMENT AND EDUCATION

Approaches that would work among black Americans include policies to empower women. "Black women often cannot insist on abstinence or the use of condoms for fear of violence or other emotional trauma," Gayle said.

Black American women are 23 times more likely than white women to become infected with the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS, the report found.

A lack of education works against young people, who are often powerless and in sexual relationships with older people, who can infect them, Gayle said. Wider testing for HIV among blacks is also essential, the report stressed.

And better prevention messages that use language that will reach drug users, youths and men who have sex with men are key.

"We have focused on abstinence-only (methods) even though they don't work in our community," Wilson said.

Information about condom use is important, Wilson said. "We also need to look at needle exchange," he said -- noting that although needle exchange programs work to reduce HIV transmission while doing nothing to encourage drug use, they are frowned upon by the federal government.

Education campaigns can battle myths about disease transmission, as well as conspiracy theories that cause many blacks to mistrust the medical system, Wilson said.

The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, will spend $48 billion over the next five years to help treat and prevent AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in 15 targeted countries and is considered a showpiece of George W. Bush's presidency.

"More black Americans are infected with HIV than the total populations of people living with HIV in seven of the 15 countries served by PEPFAR," Wilson said.

"Were black America a separate country, it would elicit major concern and extensive assistance from the U.S. government. Instead, the national response to AIDS among black Americans has been lethargic and often neglectful."

The NYPD Hates Bike Riders

Don't ride your bike in New York City. Trust me, I speak from experience. I thought it was a race thing, but it seems that I was mistaken: it's a bike thing.

New York City has apparently been so desperate for police officers that perhaps they've unofficially lowered some of their standards in hiring. Take a walk around the city and you'll see NYPD officers behaving in the most unprofessional manner: smoking on duty, having lively conversations on their cell phones instead of surveying the area for safety, gathering to have inappropriate public discussions just like a gang of hoodlums. You'll also notice that some of them are TERRIBLY out of shape and GROSSLY overweight.

And obviously, some of them haven't passed the psych exam either:

Watch this video, then read the article below it. Not to sound morbid, but I'm glad this happened to a white person. Now, maybe someone will act:

Rookie cop in hot water after video shows him slamming biker

By TAMER EL-GHOBASHY DAILY NEWS POLICE BUREAU
Updated Tuesday, July 29th 2008, 3:13 AM
A rookie NYPD cop was stripped of his badge and gun Monday after a stunning video caught him slamming a bicyclist to the ground in an apparent unprovoked attack.

Officer Patrick Pogan, 22, of the Midtown South Precinct, was bounced to desk duty soon after the video of Friday's incident in Times Square appeared on YouTube.

"The video is bad - what can you say?" a police source said. The damning video not only revealed an out-of-the-blue attack but also seems to show Pogan lied about the incident in court papers.

Pogan was one of two cops at Seventh Ave. and 46th St. monitoring a Critical Mass bike rally when a swarm of cyclists rode by ringing their bells about 9:35 p.m. Without warning, Pogan, a former high school football offensive lineman, appears to single out one cyclist, jog toward the sidewalk and then slam his shoulder into the biker.

The impact sent Christopher Long, 29, crashing to the pavement in front of shocked onlookers.
"All of a sudden the cop picked this kid out and bodychecked him," said cyclist Craig Radhuber, 54, who was riding about 3 feet to the right of Long. "I couldn't believe what was going on."

When Long tried to get up, Pogan and his partner tackled him to the ground and tried to handcuff him, witnesses said. Long "was startled and shaken, and the officers were being really violent," said witness Bill DiPaola, director of Time's Up! an environmental group that supports Critical Mass.

Long, of Bloomfield, N.J., was arrested and charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He declined to comment yesterday. His lawyer David Rankin said "the video speaks for itself" and said he may sue.

In court documents, Pogan said he saw Long weaving in and out of lanes and obstructing traffic before he ordered the cyclist to stop. The cop claimed Long deliberately drove his bike into him, sending both of them falling to the ground. Pogan claimed to have suffered cuts from the impact.

The video clearly shows Long trying to dodge Pogan, who appears to have remained upright the entire time.

Long, a grocer at the Union Square Green Market, has been described as an Army veteran and mild-mannered environmental activist. "He is a very well-meaning guy," said his boss, Morse Pitts, 56.

A law enforcement source said the charges against Long would likely "go away" and another source predicted Pogan would be fired.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said the incident is being investigated.
Pogan's father, a retired NYPD detective who worked on the Joint Terrorism Task Force, defended his son's actions last night. "You gotta do what you gotta do to make an arrest," said Patrick Pogan Sr., 51, who retired in 2002.

He said his son is the third generation of NYPD in the family. "I'm proud of my son. He's a good kid."

Critical Mass and Time's Up! - which advocate for environmental issues with the monthly protest ride - have long complained about NYPD harassment. Police officials said the groups disrupt traffic and lack permits.

"Cyclists here already face enough obstacles - law enforcement shouldn't be one of them," said City Councilman David Yassky (D-Brooklyn), a supporter of biker rights.

I'm Really Ugly. Should I Kill Myself?
By Dan Savage
Wednesday, July 23rd 2008

Dear Dan:

I'm a 22-year-old female, and the older I get, the more often I am ridiculed by straight men for being ugly. Just last night, a man asked me if I was jealous of my pretty friends and if I wished I could look like them. I know I'm unattractive, but I've met wonderful girls who I think are at least as physically unattractive as me who have managed to find someone to love them. I need to know if I should even bother anymore—it's hard to find a job, make friends, and basically just find people who will treat me like a human being. I shower every day, try to dress well, and wear makeup, but none of it seems to help. It appears that my only options are plastic surgery or suicide, and the older I get, the more appealing the latter becomes. And no, I don't have body dysmorphic disorder, I am absolutely sure. Should I send you a picture?

Anonymous

You can send me a picture if you like, Anonymous, preferably one taken by the brand-new therapist that you're going to get. Because you may or may not have body dysmorphic disorder, and you may or may not be ugly, and your friends may or may not be shining you on, but you clearly need more help than I can give you in this space. But I'll accept your self-diagnosis and say this much:

Things will get better as you get older. Not your looks, Anonymous, if your looks are truly the problem, but your peers. People are assholes in their twenties, and pouring alcohol into assholes doesn't make 'em stink less. Straight boys raised to believe that women exist for their pleasure will sometimes feel personally affronted by unattractive women, and alcohol makes them feel entitled to comment. But the passage of time makes monsters of us all, Anonymous, and the young, relatively hot straight guys tormenting you today are the bald, paunchy men (and, if there is a God, burn victims) of tomorrow.

So the numbers of guys who can appreciate what you bring to the table—your humanity, your compassion, your ability to love—will grow over time, kiddo, and you may find in middle age what your girlfriends found as young adults. Unless you off yourself in the meantime, Anonymous, in which case you won't be around to watch those cruel, drunken boys deteriorate, wither, and die. And why would you want to cheat yourself out of that?

Gay Iraqis are Threatened With Rape

Wait. We all know how notoriously, insidiously homophobic Islamic and other Arabic communities are right? They claim that Allah despises homosexuality, views it as an unclean act, and that righteous men are completely heterosexual.

Why, then, are these righteous men threatening to rape homosexuals? Maybe it's:

A. Because rape is not an act of sex, but an act of violence. So these men believe that they are perpetrating horrible violence upon homosexuals by raping them.

B. Because the "righteous men" are latent homosexuals who are using "rape as violence" as an excuse to get what they really want: male/male sex while still appearing as though they believe homosexuality is despicable.

C. Because these men apparently believe that Allah hates homosexuality, but not rape, violence and murder.

D. Because they're absolutely fucking insane.

Hypocrites Always Want to Play Innocent IV

(Former state senator Bob Allen; photo courtesy of The Palm Beach Post)

A few people have asked me the meaning behind "Hypocrites Always Want to Play Innocent." The title was inspired by a line from the Lauryn Hill song, "Lost Ones":

Hypocrites always want to play innocent
Always want to take it to the full-out extent
Always want to make it seem like good intent
Never want to face it when it's time for punishment

For me, that stanza pretty much sums up how I feel in regard to closeted politicians and clergymen who make it their business to oppress homosexuals, while secretly providing epic blowjobs and jackhammer anal sessions to random male strangers.

Former Florida state senator Bob Allen offered a man twenty bucks for the privilege of performing oral sex on him. The man, unbeknowst to Bob, was an undercover police officer. Once Bob realized that his ass was in a sling, and that his hypocritical, capitalist, republican, Christian bullshit (five adjectives which mean the exact same thing) was about to be undermined, he copped a plea--an old, American tried and true--insisting that big, scary Negroes forced him to do it. He's been proclaiming his innocence ever since.

But justice prevails! A court has rejected Bob's appeal. The fatherfucker will have to remain on his six months probation and pay the applicable fines.

Thanks, Rod 2.0 for keeping the hypocrites exposed!

The new millenium Al Jolson is at it again! This time, Justin shows his true colors (pun intended) at the ESPY Awards. This comes just as the courts recognize how foolish and capricious the FCC was in regard to fining CBS over the so-called "Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction".

It boggles my mind how many African-Americans still embrace this clown after he threw Janet under the bus. Some negroes can't bear to part with the source of their booty-shaking, no matter what it's contaminated with.

It's a rare occasion indeed to hear about Wendy Williams getting gooped. There was that one time when Erykah Badu brought heat and made Wendy feel about three inches tall. There's also the time when Mo'Nique supposedly made Wendy cry. But both of those were on radio.

Omarosa threw her name into the ring and upped the ante by dissing Wendy on live televsion! She came for Wendy with daggers sharpened. Witness the gagfest below:

Michael Verdugo from HGTV's Design Star Involved in Porn Scandal

Interior designer/police officer Michael Verdugo, one of the contestants on the popular HGTV reality series Design Star was recently suspended from his day job as a police officer pending an invesitgation into his alledged participation as a submissive, masochistic bottom slave in a gay porn film entitled Rope Rituals.

Honestly, I believe this to be much ado about nothing. Though, American police departments usually have codes of conduct rules which preclude such public behavior.

Michael Verdugo has made mainstream the gay cultural term "trade" as he was ULTRA-BUTCH on Design Star, but not so much in Rope Rituals. Duality in full-effect!

I suspect that demand for Rituals is going to increase exponentially. I wonder if Verdugo ever imagined that this would come back to bite him in the booty--considering how it always does.

Ironically, Verdugo was recently voted off the reality show for not being "camera-friendly." Maybe the judges should have taken a look at these (photos courtesy of Tom Ropes McGurk):

Mr. Ledger died in January at age 28 from an accidental overdose, after principal photography ended, and his death might have cast a paralyzing pall over the film if the performance were not so alive. But his Joker is a creature of such ghastly life, and the performance is so visceral, creepy and insistently present that the characterization pulls you in almost at once. When the Joker enters one fray with a murderous flourish and that sawed-off smile, his morbid grin a mirror of the Black Dahlia’s ear-to-ear grimace, your nervous laughter will die in your throat.

[Film Trailer] Tyler Perry's The Family that Preys

I'll admit that Tyler Perry's films are an acquired taste. They often lack subtlety or a cohesive structure, and Mr. Perry tends to pander to his mostly black, church-going audience. But after reading this New York Times article, I've come to understand and appreciate Perry's films as moral tales for a community in peril.

This is the trailer for his latest film:

Righteous Brother

(Ta-Nehisi Coates, photo courtesy of Philly Mag)

Have you ever heard of Ta-Nehisi Coates? He's a fiercely intelligent brother of sharp political savvy who has a blog that I've been enjoying for quite some time now.

Today, I read a post of his in which he discusses the inability of some members of the black community to recognize their complicity in the state of Black America. You know the type: the militant black guy who insists that white racism is the root of all black problems, marches and proselytizes from subway to street corner, but doesn't care for the myriad of children he's left for all his baby-mamas to raise on their own because, well, that's the white man's fault, too. Or the black guy who sells llegal drugs (to other black people) because it's quick and easy and doesn't involve the humility necessary to fill out a job application in fast food or retail. You might be familiar with these strategies under their more commonly-used term, "Bullshit."

I'm the first to recognize that racism has done a world of physical and psychological hurt to the black community. I also know that it continues to do so, albeit in ways much more surreptious than in antiquity (and therefore, much more insidious). But I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge the fact that some black people exacerbate the problem by neglecting to take personal responsibility, for being unwilling to struggle, for refusing to part with the sense of entitlement that leads to stagnation rather than action.

Mr. Coates shares my disappointment and outrage.

What's your take on it?

God Loves Guns

Isn't it funny how they say that God hates fags, but he loves guns?

And aren't we lucky that a church in Oklahoma has decided not to give guns to its teen congregation this year? Next year, however, you might have to dodge young guns.

I tell ya, this "God" fellow is beginning to sound less and less like a divine being and more and more like a conservative American citizen every day.

Go figure.

I first heard of the book, The Velvet Rage, while visiting Jared's blog a few months ago. Now, blogger Darian, in light of a sad revelation in a small, church-going community, has mentioned this book and I think it's time I read it myself.

It's about the struggles of growing up homosexual in a world that demands heterosexuality and the psychological, emotional and spiritual torment inflicted upon the homosexual by those demands.

Well, you know what I say to the people making the unfair, unwarranted and inhumane demands, right?

FUCK. YOU.

End of story.

Have you ever heard of the Paper Bag Test?

Over at Bossip.com, Yung Berg (or Dumb Berg if we wanted to be honest) illustrates, quite deftly, one of the diseases that persistently ails the black community.

What is with black people and the obsession with lighter skin, longer or straighter hair, and eye color other than brown? I'm astounded by how successful racism has been in inflicting this form of self-hatred on susceptible, unquestioning minds. Yung Berg needs therapy. And fast!

[Review] WONDER WOMAN #22

WONDER WOMAN #22
“Ends of the Earth Part III of IV: A Cooperation of Killers”

Aaron Lopresti: Penciller
Matt Ryan: Inker
Steve Wands: Letterer
Brad Anderson: Colorist
Nachie Castro: Associate Editor

Publisher: DC Comics

Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston

For the plans of Athena are cunning and subtle.
-Wonder Woman to Hades, God of the Dead, WONDER WOMAN #217

Gail Simone is Athena.

I’ve been a little less than impressed with Simone’s decision to immerse Wonder Woman (Diana) in the world of sword & sorcery. Parts I and II of this arc didn’t pique my interests much, but this recent installment (Part III) is a gigantic pay-off in many ways and it’s not even the final chapter.

It’s nearly impossible to discuss the story itself without referring to the artwork. Simone and Aaron Lopresti have somewhat of a symbiotic relationship in this issue. For example, I can’t tell you about the opening dream sequence in which Diana muses about having purged the world of evil without referring to how deftly and dramatically Lopresti builds to revealing the cost paid by Diana’s enemies. Simone sets the pace with Diana’s deft, patient inner monologue, giving Aaron the time he needs to build the foundation. The result is that on page one, you have one impression. Then on page two, your impression is subverted in a lavish two-page spread. It’s such a small turn of the screw, but an utterly shocking and effective one.

Further, to complement Simone’s idea of a waking dream, Aaron blends his raw pencils in with the finished and colored artwork creating a liminal space that helps elevate the sequence (for it contains information that will inform the rest of the story) while setting it eerily apart. And I cannot, of course, diminish the role Brad Anderson played in this because it was, after all, his expert hand that made the blending manifest. It’s a thoughtful collaboration between all parties involved and the result is flawless storytelling.

Aaron really has found his comfort zone with Diana and her world. She’s gorgeous in every panel. The backgrounds are filled with detail and rendered with an expert eye—from the lush greenery of the words to footprints in the sand to the markings on the belly of the Oracle to the Black Horizon, it’s all just super stunning. And the artwork gets lovelier as the story progresses. The final panel is a knockout depiction of Diana in the reflecting pool in Washington DC, which leads me to the cunning and subtle plans of Goddess Simone.

A master of subtext and known for her ability to undo the thoughtlessness of others, Simone is setting up a kind of deliverance for Diana. Diehard Wonder Woman fans know that AMAZONS ATTACK was the worst thing that has ever happened to Wonder Woman and her mythos (and perhaps, the worst thing ever written in comic form). I can’t help but suspect that Diana’s battle here is meant to wipe the slate clean and redeem her, and perhaps even her culture, before the eyes of the world.

She never fails to include, for those who may mistake Wonder Woman for just another superhero, a moment which makes clear why we revere her. This time, on page ten, we’re made aware of Diana’s compassion (which not even the Black Horizon has been able to sunder) when Diana, after The Stalker has informed her that he was never given a name, gives him one:

Even here, a princess I remain. And it is my right to grant names and honorariums as I see fit. You said you had never had a name. So I give you one for all time and purpose. You are Elpis, which in my tongue means ‘Hope.’

A feint (which coming from any other character would have read as sexist) toward the end of the tale only adds depth and wisdom to that piece of dialogue. You'll love what Diana says to Claw in regard to the words "wench" and "trollop."

There are also some other seeds being planted in this issue: the Oracle (the Barbarian dimension’s version of Barbara Gordon) tells Diana that she is being sought by Gods who wish to take her away; Hippolyta coming to Diana in a dream; a city named "Ichar"; and the death of a prominent ally.

And it wouldn’t be Simone if she didn’t manage to add a bit of levity as Tom Tresser a.k.a. Nemesis battles the telepathic gorilla warriors of Gorilla City in Diana Prince’s apartment. We also have a wondrous surprise visit from a guest for whom readers have been clamoring.

Not a single, solitary complaint from me on an issue that I thought was able to do so much at once without feeling the least bit crowded or rushed. I highly recommend this issue.

*RATING: 5 out of 5 Baldwins*

Quick hits:

ACTION COMICS #867: I detest how Geoff Johns manages to take every strong female character he writes (except, notably, Stargirl) and transform her into a indecisive, weak, wreck of a person. Supergirl is nearly unrecognizable here (though, Supergirl has been unrecognizable since her return in SUPERMAN/BATMAN). Other than that, this is an engaging story with lovely art by Gary Frank.

3 out of 5 Baldwins

BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #19: Barbara Gordon Batgirl was really this...mousey and useless? Not according to the excellent nine-issue BATGIRL: YEAR ONE series by Scott Beatty, Chuck Dixon, Alvaro Lopez and Marcos Martin I read ages ago.

Nice art by Kevin Maguire, though.

2 out of 5 Baldwins

FINAL CRISIS: REQUIEM: Honestly? I'm surprised by how much this story moved me, particularly since I was so unmoved by the first death scene in FINAL CRISIS #1. Top notch writing by Peter J. Tomasi and fantastic artwork by Doug Mahnke (who should have a regular gig!).

4 out of 5 Baldwins

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #17: This is a fantastic story about what happens when Gog gives you your heart's desire. Though, curiously, he's ignoring Citizen Steel. I smell a rat. Johns is on his A game here and pinch artist Fernando Pasarin is amazing.

4 out of 5 Baldwins

SECRET INVASION #4: Loads of action! Great character moments! But the art is so cluttered and confused that it's enough to give you a headache.

3 out of 5 Baldwins

TRINITY #6: Kurt Busiek chugs along in this very accessible and definitive take on Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Great book for all ages, though the back-up story isn't as engaging as the main one.

Shout out to Stephanie for the good word.

I want to be the best that I can be. I want to do and have and live in a way that is in harmony with my idea of the greatest goodness. I want to harmonize physically here in this body with that which I believe to be the best, or the good way, of life. If you will make those statements, and then do not take action unless you feel good, you will always be moving upon the path in harmony with your idea of that which is good.

The 37th Annual International African Arts Festival in Brooklyn July 4th-July 6th

Today is the last day of the 37th Annual International African Arts Festival in Brooklyn. My partner and I went twice this weekend. Lots to see! Great music! Though there were many vendors, the art and sculptural pieces lacked any sort of true diversity and were quite pricey! There was a small sculpture we wanted to purchase, but when the vendor told us of the $150 price, we left it right where it was. He wanted to negotiate (to a still pricey $120), but it was a no-go.

But we didn't leave the festival empty-handed. We brought home some delicious, reasonably-priced food (fried whiting, collard greens, candied yams, baked macaroni & cheese, and a very tasty pink lemonade--a recipe I must discover!) from a vendor called "The Best Soul Food South of Canadian Border." They served us huge portions and were quite courteous!

I say go check it out for the culinary experience if nothing else!

(Painting of Jesus from Faces of Jesus)

SCANDAL: Well we knew that Jesus couldn't have been as white as he's commonly depicted, but now there may be evidence indicating that Jesus' story isn't at all unique and that there have been "Jesus stories" that predate the existence of Jesus (though, scholars on ancient African folkore already know that the "Jesus story" existed in various incarnations in various African mythologies and religions for millenia, including the mythologies of Egyptian pantheon).

Jesse Helms, dead on the Fourth o' July (talk about IRONY!):

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/04/obit.helms/index.html

Happy Independence Day!

"The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro"

Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory....

...Fellow-citizens, pardon me, allow me to ask, why am I called upon to speak here to-day? What have I, or those I represent, to do with your national independence? Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice, embodied in that Declaration of Independence, extended to us? and am I, therefore, called upon to bring our humble offering to the national altar, and to confess the benefits and express devout gratitude for the blessings resulting from your independence to us?

Would to God, both for your sakes and ours, that an affirmative answer could be truthfully returned to these questions! Then would my task be light, and my burden easy and delightful. For who is there so cold, that a nation's sympathy could not warm him? Who so obdurate and dead to the claims of gratitude, that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? Who so stolid and selfish, that would not give his voice to swell the hallelujahs of a nation's jubilee, when the chains of servitude had been torn from his limbs? I am not that man. In a case like that, the dumb might eloquently speak, and the "lame man leap as an hart."

But such is not the state of the case. I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn. To drag a man in fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and call upon him to join you in joyous anthems, were inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony. Do you mean, citizens, to mock me, by asking me to speak to-day? If so, there is a parallel to your conduct. And let me warn you that it is dangerous to copy the example of a nation whose crimes, towering up to heaven, were thrown down by the breath of the Almighty, burying that nation in irrevocable ruin! I can to-day take up the plaintive lament of a peeled and woe-smitten people!

"By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yea! we wept when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there, they that carried us away captive, required of us a song; and they who wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How can we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? If I forget thee, 0 Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth."

Fellow-citizens, above your national, tumultuous joy, I hear the mournful wail of millions! whose chains, heavy and grievous yesterday, are, to-day, rendered more intolerable by the jubilee shouts that reach them. If I do forget, if I do not faithfully remember those bleeding children of sorrow this day, "may my right hand forget her cunning, and may my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth!" To forget them, to pass lightly over their wrongs, and to chime in with the popular theme, would be treason most scandalous and shocking, and would make me a reproach before God and the world. My subject, then, fellow-citizens, is American slavery. I shall see this day and its popular characteristics from the slave's point of view. Standing there identified with the American bondman, making his wrongs mine, I do not hesitate to declare, with all my soul, that the character and conduct of this nation never looked blacker to me than on this 4th of July! Whether we turn to the declarations of the past, or to the professions of the present, the conduct of the nation seems equally hideous and revolting. America is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the future. Standing with God and the crushed and bleeding slave on this occasion, I will, in the name of humanity which is outraged, in the name of liberty which is fettered, in the name of the constitution and the Bible which are disregarded and trampled upon, dare to call in question and to denounce, with all the emphasis I can command, everything that serves to perpetuate slavery the great sin and shame of America! "I will not equivocate; I will not excuse"; I will use the severest language I can command; and yet not one word shall escape me that any man, whose judgment is not blinded by prejudice, or who is not at heart a slaveholder, shall not confess to be right and just.

But I fancy I hear some one of my audience say, "It is just in this circumstance that you and your brother abolitionists fail to make a favorable impression on the public mind. Would you argue more, an denounce less; would you persuade more, and rebuke less; your cause would be much more likely to succeed." But, I submit, where all is plain there is nothing to be argued. What point in the anti-slavery creed would you have me argue? On what branch of the subject do the people of this country need light? Must I undertake to prove that the slave is a man? That point is conceded already. Nobody doubts it. The slaveholders themselves acknowledge it in the enactment of laws for their government. They acknowledge it when they punish disobedience on the part of the slave. There are seventy-two crimes in the State of Virginia which, if committed by a black man (no matter how ignorant he be), subject him to the punishment of death; while only two of the same crimes will subject a white man to the like punishment. What is this but the acknowledgment that the slave is a moral, intellectual, and responsible being? The manhood of the slave is conceded. It is admitted in the fact that Southern statute books are covered with enactments forbidding, under severe fines and penalties, the teaching of the slave to read or to write. When you can point to any such laws in reference to the beasts of the field, then I may consent to argue the manhood of the slave. When the dogs in your streets, when the fowls of the air, when the cattle on your hills, when the fish of the sea, and the reptiles that crawl, shall be unable to distinguish the slave from a brute, then will I argue with you that the slave is a man!

For the present, it is enough to affirm the equal manhood of the Negro race. Is it not astonishing that, while we are ploughing, planting, and reaping, using all kinds of mechanical tools, erecting houses, constructing bridges, building ships, working in metals of brass, iron, copper, silver and gold; that, while we are reading, writing and ciphering, acting as clerks, merchants and secretaries, having among us lawyers, doctors, ministers, poets, authors, editors, orators and teachers; that, while we are engaged in all manner of enterprises common to other men, digging gold in California, capturing the whale in the Pacific, feeding sheep and cattle on the hill-side, living, moving, acting, thinking, planning, living in families as husbands, wives and children, and, above all, confessing and worshipping the Christian's God, and looking hopefully for life and immortality beyond the grave, we are called upon to prove that we are men!

Would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty? that he is the rightful owner of his own body? You have already declared it. Must I argue the wrongfulness of slavery? Is that a question for Republicans? Is it to be settled by the rules of logic and argumentation, as a matter beset with great difficulty, involving a doubtful application of the principle of justice, hard to be understood? How should I look to-day, in the presence of Amercans, dividing, and subdividing a discourse, to show that men have a natural right to freedom? speaking of it relatively and positively, negatively and affirmatively. To do so, would be to make myself ridiculous, and to offer an insult to your understanding. There is not a man beneath the canopy of heaven that does not know that slavery is wrong for him.

What, am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow men, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with dogs, to sell them at auction, to sunder their families, to knock out their teeth, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their mastcrs? Must I argue that a system thus marked with blood, and stained with pollution, is wrong? No! I will not. I have better employment for my time and strength than such arguments would imply.

What, then, remains to be argued? Is it that slavery is not divine; that God did not establish it; that our doctors of divinity are mistaken? There is blasphemy in the thought. That which is inhuman, cannot be divine! Who can reason on such a proposition? They that can, may; I cannot. The time for such argument is passed.

At a time like this, scorching irony, not convincing argument, is needed. O! had I the ability, and could reach the nation's ear, I would, to-day, pour out a fiery stream of biting ridicule, blasting reproach, withering sarcasm, and stern rebuke. For it is not light that is needed, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake. The feeling of the nation must be quickened; the conscience of the nation must be roused; the propriety of the nation must be startled; the hypocrisy of the nation must be exposed; and its crimes against God and man must be proclaimed and denounced.

What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to Him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.

Go where you may, search where you will, roam through all the monarchies and despotisms of the Old World, travel through South America, search out every abuse, and when you have found the last, lay your facts by the side of the everyday practices of this nation, and you will say with me, that, for revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival....

...Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation which must inevitably work the downfall of slavery. "The arm of the Lord is not shortened," and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from "the Declaration of Independence," the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age. Nations do not now stand in the same relation to each other that they did ages ago. No nation can now shut itself up from the surrounding world and trot round in the same old path of its fathers without interference. The time was when such could be done. Long established customs of hurtful character could formerly fence themselves in, and do their evil work with social impunity. Knowledge was then confined and enjoyed by the privileged few, and the multitude walked on in mental darkness. But a change has now come over the affairs of mankind. Walled cities and empires have become unfashionable. The arm of commerce has borne away the gates of the strong city. Intelligence is penetrating the darkest corners of the globe. It makes its pathway over and under the sea, as well as on the earth. Wind, steam, and lightning are its chartered agents. Oceans no longer divide, but link nations together. From Boston to London is now a holiday excursion. Space is comparatively annihilated. -- Thoughts expressed on one side of the Atlantic are distinctly heard on the other.

The far off and almost fabulous Pacific rolls in grandeur at our feet. The Celestial Empire, the mystery of ages, is being solved. The fiat of the Almighty, "Let there be Light," has not yet spent its force. No abuse, no outrage whether in taste, sport or avarice, can now hide itself from the all-pervading light. The iron shoe, and crippled foot of China must be seen in contrast with nature. Africa must rise and put on her yet unwoven garment. 'Ethiopia, shall, stretch. out her hand unto Ood." In the fervent aspirations of William Lloyd Garrison, I say, and let every heart join in saying it:

God speed the year of jubilee
The wide world o'er!
When from their galling chains set free,
Th' oppress'd shall vilely bend the knee,
And wear the yoke of tyranny
Like brutes no more.
That year will come, and freedom's reign,
To man his plundered rights again
Restore.

God speed the day when human blood
Shall cease to flow!
In every clime be understood,
The claims of human brotherhood,
And each return for evil, good,
Not blow for blow;
That day will come all feuds to end,
And change into a faithful friend
Each foe.

God speed the hour, the glorious hour,
When none on earth
Shall exercise a lordly power,
Nor in a tyrant's presence cower;
But to all manhood's stature tower,
By equal birth!
That hour will come, to each, to all,
And from his Prison-house, to thrall
Go forth.

Until that year, day, hour, arrive,
With head, and heart, and hand
I'll strive,
To break the rod, and rend the gyve,
The spoiler of his prey deprive --
So witness Heaven!
And never from my chosen post,
Whate'er the peril or the cost,
Be driven.

Wisconsin Gay Couples Could Face Jail For Marrying In California

(Madison, Wisconsin) Same-sex couples from Wisconsin who go to California to marry could find themselves facing criminal charges when they return home.

A little known Wisconsin law makes it a criminal offense to enter into a marriage outside the state if that marriage were illegal in Wisconsin.

While the law was passed decades ago to prevent underage couples from crossing state lines to marry it could be used against same-sex couples the Madison Capital Times reported Wednesday.

The penalty is a fine of up to $10,000, nine months in prison, or both. Wisconsin law limits marriage to opposite-sex couples.

Same-sex marriage became legal in California following a state Supreme Court ruling that went into effect June 17. Unlike Massachusetts which limits gay marriage only to out-of-state couples whose marriages would be legal at home the California ruling opened up marriage to anyone.

LGBT civil rights group Fair Wisconsin is warning couples they could face arrest if they marry in California.

It is not known how many gay and lesbian couples from the state have wed in California. One couple from Madison who are preparing to marry say they are willing to take the chance.
"It would be interesting to be prosecuted," Bob Klebba who is planning to marry longtime partner David Waugh told the Capital Times. "It would really bring up a reaction in the public sentiment."

In 2006, Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.

Fair Wisconsin said it is now focusing its efforts on seeking passage of bills granting recognition of domestic partnerships.

Spokesperson Glenn Carlson said he is hopeful of getting a bill passed in the next session of the legislature.

Revisiting the WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO WONDER WOMAN Panel

(Wonder Woman photo courtesy of and illustrated by Travis Charest)

I think that Greg's biggest issue with Wonder Woman's killing of Maxwell Lord is how Wonder Woman was editorially-mandated to behave afterwards.

About a year ago, Greg did an interview/radio podcast with Word Balloon and he stated that what Dan, Geoff and Allan had planned for Diana after "Sacrifice" was contrary to the character's nature. In his own stories, Greg wrote a Diana that was faced with a choice: Kill Maxwell Lord or allow Superman to be manipulated into killing all of his loved ones. And she willingly compromised her own mission in order to save Superman and spare him that trauma.

Superman was horrified by her actions and shunned her. If you remember in the follow-up in ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, Lois told him, "She was right, Clark." But Superman was unconvinced and told her so in INFINITE CRISIS #1. Batman's response was a bit more nuanced (even though this wasn't obvious in the text): if even Wonder Woman—the woman sent here to save us from ourselves and teach us how to live together in peace and harmony—is forced to kill, then what hope is there?

The "sacrifice," on all fronts, was Diana's.

Greg intended to play this out with Wonder Woman NEVER being ashamed of her choice and remaining convinced that her actions were for the greatest good. The world would give Diana a rough time, a REALLY rough time. But in the face of this, Diana would be undaunted, even if devastated that her mission was deemed a failure. Greg's Diana would have NEVER wavered on the fact that she did what was necessary to stop a great evil.

Then Greg was unceremoniously pulled from the title (and put on SUPERGIRL). I think the decision was sales-driven (some of my friends at DC suspect otherwise); for most of Greg’s run, sales languished at the 29-30K mark. WONDER WOMAN #219, the “Sacrifice” issue, was the biggest seller, selling about 95K. I think if Greg was given a high-profile, consistent artist (Rags Morales was placed on the book while he was going through a rough divorce; his Wonder Woman model was his wife and he stated publicly that the last thing he wanted to do was draw Wonder Woman and that often came through in his work and his inability to finish), his WONDER WOMAN would have been a terrific sales success. From a literary standpoint, I think Greg’s work on the book was incredibly sophisticated, thoughtful, clever, layered and textured; it’s my favorite run on Wonder Woman ever. The people at the Sequart Research and Literacy Organization think it’s brilliant, too. Though, I do hear from many of my sister readers that they felt the book was a bit dark and melancholy during Rucka’s tenure.

When Allan Heinberg came on, he wrote a different kind of Diana (according to his own Word Balloon interview, DC editorial didn't give him much of a choice). So Allan wrote a Diana (who we first saw in INFINITE CRISIS #7) full of regret, a Diana who called her actions against Maxwell Lord a mistake, a Diana who took a long trip to nowhere to learn what Greg's Diana knew all along, a Diana who was convinced to go into hiding and tricked into believing that she could continue her mission as an ambassador of peace by disguising herself as a Department of Metahuman Affairs agent. This new Diana was everything Greg's Diana was not: duplicitous, cowardly and embracing all the worst traits of a politician.

Narratively, metatextually, it didn't make a lick of sense given what we've seen previously, given the story that precedes it, given what we were told about who Diana was prior to the reboot. But it was editorially imposed and I’m sure Allan was told, like Tim Gunn tells his students on Project Runway, to “make it work”—and he did the best he could; I’m sure of it. Nevertheless, his best wasn’t logical, consistent or coherent given what we knew about Diana.

My suspicion (because I don't have any actual proof, but in thinking about the issue I'm forced to notice certain strategies and assign meaning to them) is that this complete 180 in characterization was so that Superman wouldn't come off looking like a punk for being saved by a righteous woman, and so that he wouldn’t look like an asshole for looking a gift horse in the mouth. That is to say that given the premises set up by Greg, what Wonder Woman did was just. So to have Superman go against Wonder Woman would place him precariously close to unjust—and unnecessarily punitive since Diana had the most to lose by killing Maxwell Lord (her mission, her friendships) and Superman everything to gain (not being turned into a murderer; though DC would purge this possibility too: in BOOSTER GOLD, Geoff Johns created a story in which it was revealed that Maxwell Lord couldn't, after all, make Superman kill; Diana's sacrifice was, according to Johns and company, for naught).

DC's attempt to reconcile this appeared in a MANHUNTER arc. The compromise was that Diana was exonerated, but the truth of what transpired was purposely hidden so as not to tarnish Superman's reputation. Mark Andreyko did his damndest to make Wonder Woman seem honorable, but given when Greg had already told us about this remarkable woman, those attempts fell, in my opinion, incredibly short and hollow.

As you can see, I was one of the readers who didn’t enjoy Wonder Woman’s return to pre-Crisis whimsy after all the skill and depth and time and intelligence Greg had put into the character. And I am still a bit angry about how it all went down. But I acknowledge how many other readers enjoyed the light-hearted, mainstream appeal of Allan's arc.

And I’m hopeful about what Gail Simone has in store.

Texas Justice, a.k.a. "I do what the fuck I wants and kills whoever I damn well please! Especially if they looks like the redskins 'cause I gots my trusty rifle raght chere! Yeeeehaaaa!"

Mr. Joe Horn, the man who called 911 in the recording below, was acquitted on all charges after he shot three suspected burglars (who were allegedly robbing his neighbor's home) in the back, even after he was warned by the 911 operator not to go outside. If you listen to the 911 tape, you even hear Mr. Horn say, "I'm gonna kill 'em." Premeditation. But everyone loves a cowboy, no?

No.

I think it's time America got over its deification of cowboys, or at least made an attempt to see them for what they truly are: all hat and no substance at best and practitioners of genocide at worst.
